Welcome to the Dixie Regional Hosta Society……
If you live in any one of the states shown on our logo, and you are a member of the American Hosta Society, or if you are a member of any local hosta society located in one of those 12 states, then you are automatically a member of the DRHS.
The American Hosta Society formed the regional societies in order to promote the interchange of hosta information between groups of hosta aficionados who grow under similar conditions.
Here in the Dixie Region, while we are diverse, since we run from Texas to Virginia, Florida to Tennessee, we all have a considerably longer hosta growing season than do our northern counterparts. Add our famous humidity to the mix, and we have our own unique issues relative to hosta culture. The up-side is that we get to enjoy our hostas much longer each year.
Education is the primary mission of all hosta societies, and exposing the general public to the joys of hosta is foremost among our goals. To this end, DRHS holds annual meetings each year, inviting the general public to attend at least some of our events.
If you are new to hostas, live in the south and want to learn more about hostas, you’ve come to the right place. Start by exploring our website and contacting the local society that serves your area. If there is no local, then join the AHS; you will automatically become a member of the Dixie Region. If you would like to form a local hosta goup, please contact me and we can assist you in getting organized.
Hostas are easy to grow, especially if you select varieties that, historically, have done well in the south. With the drought that we have been under for the past few years, many of us have had special challenges, as hostas do love water. However, planting in containers can increase the efficiency with which your hostas can utilize the water they do get. Hostas, even the giant varieties, thrive in containers. Look at some of the photos on our website and you will see how many of our experts use containers, pots, troughs and raised beds to keep their hostas happy.
We hope that you will become an active member of DRHS and try to attend our next meeting, which will be held here in the Atlanta area on June 5 and 6, 2009.
I look forward to my tenure as Regional Director and welcome you but most of all, I’d like to meet you in person at one of the many events that are held throughout the region each year.
My thanks to the four regional directors who have preceeded me in this postion: Our Founding Director, Toni Wright (1996-2000); Claudia Walker (2000-2004) and Mike Chambers (2004-2008) The groundwork that they laid has given me a sound financial basis on which to take us into the next four years.
Please contact me, directly to find out more about the Dixie Regional Hosta Society.
Cordially,
Judy Burns
