The hosta plant chosen as the 2009 Hosta of the Year is ‘Earth Angel’. This hosta was registered by Hans Hansen/Shady Oaks Nursery, in 2002 and is a wonderful variegated form of beloved classic ‘Blue Angel’. This hosta features large heart-shaped blue-green leaves that have a wide creamy-white border topped by pale lavender flowers in early summer. H. Earth Angel is destined to be a show stopper when used as a specimen in the shady landscape.
The American Hosta Growers Association established the AHGA Hosta of the Year in 1996. Each year it is selected by a vote of AHGA members. Award winners are hostas that are good garden plants in all a regions of the country, are widely available and in sufficient supply and retail for about $15.00 in the year of selection.
